Sip and Savor: Making Boba Tea at Home- DIY Bubble Tea at Home!

3:34 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

Boba tea, also known as bubble tea, has taken over my house by storm since I discovered last year.
It has delightful combination of chewy tapioca pearls and refreshing tea flavors. While you can buy at bubble tea shops, it can be pricey, there’s something satisfying about making your own boba tea at home. . Not only is it a fun and rewarding experience, but it also allows you to customize your drink to suit your sweetness and taste preferences.

Ad-Free Recipe:

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make boba tea at home:

Gather Your Ingredients:
You’ll need just a few basic ingredients to get started:

Tapioca Pearls: These chewy little spheres are the heart of any boba tea. You can find them in the International section of grocery sore some Asian grocery stores or order them online. There are different  kinds. I prefer the kind that  are almost instant, Brown Sugar 5 minute Brew that you can also do in the microwave in under 3 minutes.

Tea: Brew or choose your favorite tea flavor, whether it’s classic black tea, green tea, oolong tea, or even fruity herbal blends. I make up a bold Typhoo or Tetley brand, sometimes decaffeinated. I also really like any kinds of Rose flavoured  milk tea.

Milk or similar. Milk adds creaminess to your boba tea, use homogenized or even a bit of half and half.  Dairy-free options like almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk work just as well.

Sweetener: This is optional and depends on your taste preferences. Common sweeteners include brown sugar ugar, honey, or flavored syrups like vanilla or caramel.

Ice Cubes: To chill your boba tea

Prepare the Tapioca Pearls ( follow package instructions)

For most brands:

Boil Water: In a medium saucepan, bring water to a rolling boil and approximately 300 grams of pearls per serving.  Carefully add the tapioca pearls to the boiling water, stir gently to prevent sticking.

Cook the Pearls: Let the pearls cook for about 5 minutes or according to the instructions on the package. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. I take off heat and let sit another 5 minutes in hot water.

Rinse and Drain: Once the pearls are cooked, rinse them under cold water and drain them to remove excess starch.

Optional: For added sweetness and flavor, you can soak the cooked pearls in a simple syrup made from equal parts sugar and brown sugar.

Brew the Tea and add sweeteners,  chill  until ready to use.

Assemble Your Boba Tea: Fill the Glass with Ice: Fill a glass with ice cubes to create a refreshing base for your boba tea.

Add Tapioca Pearls: Spoon boba pearls into the glass.

Pour in the Tea: Carefully pour the chilled tea over the pearls, leaving room at the top for milk or non-dairy alternatives.

Add Milk or Non-Dairy Alternative: Pour milk or your preferred non-dairy alternative into the glass, filling it to the top.

Stir and Enjoy: Use a large straw to stir the boba tea, mixing the flavors of tea, milk, and tapioca pearls. Sip and savor the delightful combination of textures and tastes!

Get Creative:
Once you’ve mastered the basics of making boba tea at home, don’t be afraid to get creative with your recipes.

Experiment with different tea flavors, milk alternatives, and sweeteners to discover your perfect blend. You can also add toppings like fruit jelly, flavored syrups, or even fresh fruit slices for an extra burst of flavor and fun. The possibilities are endless when it comes to crafting your own delicious boba tea creations!

Final Thoughts:
Making boba tea at home is a fun and rewarding experience that allows you to unleash your creativity in the kitchen. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of patience, you can whip up a refreshing and satisfying beverage that rivals your favorite bubble tea shop. So gather your supplies, get brewing, and treat yourself to the deliciousness of homemade boba tea today!

Piecing Together the Past: A Brief History of Jigsaw Puzzles

12:51 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

Jigsaw puzzles have been captivating minds and bringing families together for decades, providing both entertainment and calm.

Jigsaw puzzles can be traced back to the 1760s in Europe.

It is believed that the first puzzles were created as educational tools, designed to teach geography to children. These early puzzles were made from wood and hand-cut into irregularly shaped pieces. They were known as “dissected maps” and were primarily used in classrooms to facilitate learning about the world’s geography in a tactile and interactive manner.

However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that jigsaw puzzles gained popularity as a form of entertainment. In the 1880s, advancements in printing technology allowed for mass production of puzzles, making them more accessible to the general public. These puzzles featured colorful images and intricate designs, ranging from pastoral landscapes to famous works of art.

Jigsaw puzzles experienced a resurgence in popularity as an affordable form of entertainment

During the Great Depression of the 1930s,Families would gather around the kitchen table to work on puzzles together, providing a much-needed distraction from the hardships of the time. Manufacturers capitalized on this trend by producing puzzles with increasingly complex designs and larger piece counts.

The rise of themed puzzles- a puzzle for everyone

During the mid-century we see an increase in themed puzzles, catering to a wide range of interests and hobbies. From wildlife scenes to famous landmarks, there was a puzzle for everyone. Companies like Ravensburger and Springbok became synonymous with high-quality puzzles, known for their durable pieces and vibrant images.

Puzzles have timeless appeal

Despite  the age of the internet, the appeal of jigsaw puzzles remains timeless. They offer a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life, encouraging mindfulness and relaxation. Working on a puzzle stimulates the brain, improving cognitive function and problem-solving skills. It’s a form of entertainment that is both challenging and rewarding, fostering a sense of accomplishment with each piece snapped.

In recent years, jigsaw puzzles have experienced a renaissance, attracting a new generation of enthusiasts. Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have become hubs for puzzle enthusiasts to share their creations and connect with other puzzle lovers.

Events such as puzzle competitions and puzzle conventions have gained popularity, further solidifying the puzzling’s place in contemporary culture.

It’s clear that jigsaw puzzles will continue to endure as a beloved pastime. Whether enjoyed alone or with loved ones, they offer escape into a world of creativity and discovery.

Make a puzzle collection spreadsheet- Organize your Collection with Simple Spreadsheet

5:06 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

Organizing a puzzle collection with a spreadsheet can be an efficient way to keep track of your puzzles.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

Create Columns

Open a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets and create columns for different attributes you want to track. Common puzzle attrubutes might be:

Puzzle Brand
Title/Theme
Number of Pieces
Box Size
Holiday/Season
Puzzle Artist
Date Acquired
Completion Status
Cost
Notes

Enter Puzzle Information

Fill in the rows with details for each puzzle in your collection. Include as much information as you find helpful. This may include the brand name, puzzle title or theme, number of pieces, box dimensions, whether it’s related to a holiday or season, when you acquired it, whether you’ve completed it, and any additional notes such as special features or personal preferences.

Use Filters and Sorting

Utilize the filtering and sorting functions of your spreadsheet program to arrange and view your collection based on different criteria. For example, you can sort puzzles by brand, theme, holiday, box size, or any other attribute you’ve included in your spreadsheet.

Color Coding or Conditional Formatting

You can enhance the visual organization of your spreadsheet by applying color coding or conditional formatting. For instance, you might highlight puzzles related to holidays in different colors, or use conditional formatting to automatically highlight puzzles with certain characteristics, such as unfinished puzzles or those with a high number of pieces.

Create Pivot Tables or Charts (Optional)

If you want to analyze your collection in more depth, you can create pivot tables or charts from your spreadsheet data. These can provide insights into patterns or trends within your collection, such as the distribution of puzzle themes or the most common brands you own.

“Easter Eggs” Puzzle Review by Cobble Hill – Easter Sugar Cookies

4:35 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

Easter Eggs cookie puzzle

Easter Eggs Jigsaw Puzzle Review

Overall puzzle rating: 7.5/10

Puzzle Company: Cobble Hill
Number of pieces: 1000
Completed size: 26.5x 19″
Puzzle Artist: Cobble Hill Creations (photograph)
Skill level: Medium- Intermediate
Puzzle Pieces: 1000 piece size. Random cut. Thicker than average. Linen-style paper

Notes: This Easter Egg puzzle is one of several in a series of brightly coloured seasonal themed iced sugar-cookies.
There is an Ugly Sweater, Day of the Dead “Sugar Skulls”, Halloween Cookies, Tropical Cookies and Chanukah puzzle in this sugar cookie them as well.

Highlights include: HD efference poster and their glare-free linen paper puzzle pieces. This what makes the a “jigsaw” cut above Ravensburger Puzzles ( in my opinion}.

The 1000-piece puzzle features dozens of egg-shaped sugar cookies. The cookies are artfully decorated with ribbons of royal icing, pastel pearls and cotton candy swirls. The occasion Easter bunny makes an egg-pearance .
I suggested intermediate puzzle skill level because of size.
The 1000 piece size can be intimidating for beginners or puzzlers who prefer larger pieces. The architectural-lines and colour variations of royal icing on the cookies make it easy to match up pieces.

This Spring colors combined with last lingering days of winter make for a sunny egg-sperience… hopping into Spring.
I did give a lower rating than it probably deserves, I prefer illustrations or images done by artists and not a big fan of photographs or digital images for my puzzles.

Deer and Pheasant Puzzle Review- Cobble Hill

12:28 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

deer and pheasant puzzle

Deer and Pheasant Puzzle

Puzzle Company: Cobble Hill
Number of pieces: 500
Completed size: 19.25″ x 26.625″
Puzzle Artist: Carl Brenders
Overall rating: 6.5/10

Puzzler Notes: Random-cut puzzle pieces. Includes a reference poster- the quality is excellent. No glare linen puzzle pieces.

The image lovely. A familiar theme of deer in the meadow. The blue sky in background makes for nice contrast, but I do prefer more colour in puzzles. The feather and fur is very hard to do in a puzzle.

Cobble Hill’s “Dear and Pheasant” puzzle presents a picturesque scene that transports puzzlers to the serene beauty of the wilderness. The artwork captures a tranquil moment in nature, where a majestic deer and a vibrant pheasant coexist harmoniously amidst a lush forest backdrop.

At the forefront of the image stands a magnificent buck, its proud antlers reaching towards the sky. The deer’s gaze is tranquil yet vigilant, reflecting its inherent connection to the wilderness. Its coat, painted in rich earth tones, blends seamlessly with the surrounding foliage, camouflaging it against the forest floor.

Beside the deer stands a colorful pheasant, its plumage ablaze with hues of iridescent greens, blues, and reds. The pheasant’s intricate feathers are meticulously rendered, showcasing the artist’s attention to detail.  The bird adds a dynamic element to the scene, contrasting against subdued earthtones of the forest.

In the background, towering trees stretch , their branches adorned with lush green leaves. Shafts of golden sunlight filter through the foliage, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor below. The tranquil atmosphere is further enhanced by the stream, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the natural splendor that surrounds it.

Overall, the image on Cobble Hill’s “Dear and Pheasant” puzzle encapsulates the timeless beauty of the wilderness, inviting puzzlers to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature’s embrace. With its exquisite detail and captivating scenery, this puzzle promises a rewarding and immersive puzzling experience for nature lovers and puzzle lovers alike.

The image is by Belgian artist Carl Brenders (b.1937) is an internationally recognized wildlife painter known for his exceptionally faithful and powerful rendition of nature.
His paintings, typically created on illustration board, are executed in a mixed-media combination of watercolor and gouache.
In 2002 at the prestigious Birds in Art Exhibition organized by the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, WI, he was honored with Master Artist status.

Two Cedar Waxwing birds are perched on tree with laden with colourful red berries. Lovely landscape with a red barn with a silo and windmill and cute pond.

I loved this puzzle. I found the colour palette soothing. The details in painting of the birds made each puzzle snap a delight.
Don’t let the browns fool you-there is lots of colour and texture to m make this a great puzzle experience.
The larger size, 1000 pieces took me longer than usual. This is nice one to do as a couple or family.
