Winter Deer Jigsaw Puzzle by Cobble Hill- Review

Winter Deer Puzzle

Winter Deer Jigsaw Puzzle

Puzzle Company: Cobble Hill
Number of pieces: 500
Completed size: 19.25″ x 26.625″
Puzzle Artist: Persis Clayton Weirs
Overall rating: 6.5/10
Skill level: Difficult

Notes: Posted included. Glare-free puzzle pieces.
The artist, Persis Clayton Weirs is known for her wildlife works and often painted scenes from her native Maine. The images and details are beautiful. Sadly she passed away in 2016.

This is a lovely image however it does not make for an easy puzzle experience. The 500 piece size makes it manageable however the limited colour palate was difficult and at time frustrating for me. I am someone who does puzzles solely on the image. I prefer a colourful image to look at. I also not a puzzler that likes the challenge of difficult puzzles, so keep on mind. This might be the puzzle for you!

calendula cream flower salve

Best Calendula Cream Recipe EVER

Ingredients:
2 Cups Calendula flower
1 Cup Comfrey leaf
I cup chamomile flower
1 Cup Lavender flower
opt: 1/2 Cup Marshmallow Root
opt: 1/4 Cup Myrrh Gum
opt.: 1 Cup St. John’s wort flower

1 litre ( 4 Cups) Olive Oil
Grated Bee’s wax
opt: Essential oil of Lavender
opt: Vitamin E Oil

Directions for Calendula Cream:
1. Combine the herbs and olive oil in a glass jar ( a large mason jar or pickle jar works well). Cover tightly and let sit in warm sunny spot for at least two weeks.

2. Strain oil mixture through cheese cloth, saving oil. Squeeze tightly to get remaining oil.

3. Put oil in double boil on very low heat. Let warm for warm hour. Strain again.

4. Add approximately 1/4- 1/2 Cup grated beeswax, depending on consistency you would like. You can text by dropping few drops of melted liquid on wax or parchment paper and let cool or put small amount in freezer for 5 minutes. Make sure it is spreadable.

4. Add essential oils, Pour into small jars.

This makes a wonderful cream or slave for diaper rash, people with sensitive skin, or dry itchy skin.
I have been making for over 25 years. I started making my own cream specifically to use a when I was using cloth diapers and used as barrier cream. I used to give as little gifts for baby shower or at Christmas and people would keep coming back for more, saying it really helped them with their skin and I keep in my repertoire to make each year!

Overall rating: 7.5/10

Notes: Image is done in watercolours, with rich, intensely pigmented colours.
Cobble Hill puzzle feature glare-reducing linen paper.
The artist, Greg Alexander, from Wisconsin is a well known nature artist. His art is painting is hyper realistic.

Puzzler Notes: Interesting random cut puzzle pieces. Includes a reference poster- the quality is excellent.

The image nice, but lots of similar grasses and fur make it challenging. This is on the difficult side and would not start out with this or give as a gift to beginner puzzler or if you hate fur, like me.
this is good for someone who likes bears.

Puzzle Advent Calendar “Christmas Town” from EuroGraphics Puzzles

7:06 pm By Canadian Puzzler Leave a Comment

photo of puzzle advent calendar

Puzzle Company: EuroGraphics Puzzles
Number of pieces: 24 puzzles of 50 pieces each
Completed size: 5×5 inches
Overall rating: 10/10 !!!!

Notes: Image is done in watercolours, a very vintage colour palette and style

Puzzler Notes: Smaller sized puzzle pieces. Each puzzle was a ‘surprise” . At 50 pieces each, these were bite sized pieces of Christmas fun! Most were done within a half hour or less. Lots of snowy trees, snowmen, a snow globe, reindeer and Santa’s sleigh!
This make a fantastic hostess gift over the winter, a family gift or secret Santa exchange.

There are 24 puzzles with 50 pieces each. Each Puzzle Size is 5″ x 5″.
The box is very sturdy and each puzzle is behind a numbered flap in plastic.
I will see if I can get small cloth bags for each of these puzzles for storage.
I am not sure if I will do each year or glue and string up make up as ornaments or decorations for my fireplace mantle.
( Note- I will do each year- this was so fun!)

Will you be doing a puzzle advent calendar this year?

Christmas Song Birds Puzzle by Ravensburger : Puzzle Review

christmas song birds puzzle Ravensburger review

Celebrate puzzling season with the sights and sounds of Christmas Songbirds!

Christmas songbirds gather n a holiday wreath: an Oriole, Tufted Titmouse, Eastern Bluebird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Red Cardinal, Chickadee, Bluebird, and Western Tanager, all against a snowy winter backdrop.

Puzzle Company: Ravensburger
Number of pieces: 500
Completed size: 20 x 14 inches
Puzzle Artist: Ingrid Slyder
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Notes: Image is done in watercolours, with rich, intensely pigmented colours.
The artist, Ingrid Slyder is known for her watercolours. She lives in Richmond, Virginia with her family.

Puzzler Notes: Larger sized puzzle pieces. Making it easier for less dextrous puzzlers. and a quick fix for advanced puzzlers! Sadly, Ravensburger does not include reference posters with their puzzles, like Cobble Hill.

The image quality is gorgeous, and makes for perfect puzzle on a blustery winter day.
The puzzle had lots of differing colours and textures so was easy- medium easy level.
Highly recommend!

Best Traditional Scottish Shortbread Recipe- Grandma Brown’s Shortbread!

3:03 pm By Canadian Puzzler

traditional Scottish shortbreadThis is my great-grandmother’s shortbread recipe. She came to Canada from Scotland with my grandfather in 1908, just before the Great War.

My grandmother was born in 1922, when she was growing up, shortbread a special Christmas treat to enjoy and share over during the holidays best eaten with a hot cuppa, a wee dram of whisky and maybe a poem or two.

As far back as I can remember, every holiday my grandmother’s shortbread was all made during Christmas and we have enjoyed for decades. My own grandmother in her later days, well into her 80′, made batch after batch in her old round pie tins. She stored them in cookie tins she saved throughout the years, and stocked up on pounds and pounds of butter she bought on sale and stored on her freezer.

pans for Scottish shortbread
This is as traditional a Scottish recipe for shortbread that you can get- I have made dozens of batches over the past 40y years; When given as gifts or served for dessert at Christmas dinner, people always, always rave about these shortbread cookies and tell me they are the best shortbread cookie they have ever eaten.

Pre-heat oven to 375F (you will lower to 350)

This recipe will make 2 round pie tins or 1 large 9x13in tray of shortbread cookies. I usually line with parchment.

Grandma Brown’s Shortbread!

Ingredients:
1 Cup Flour
1 Cup icing sugar
1 cup corn starch
1 cup rice flour

1lb unsalted butter (yes, its a lot of butter)
large pinch of salt

Directions:
Cream butter ( I have done by hand or using stand mixer)
Cream in sugar
Cream in rest of ingredient until blended.
Spread dough into prepared pans, it will be very sticky.

Put into oven on middle rack; lower heat to 350F.
Back 25 mins or until golden- do not overbake.
When cooled slightly, after about 20 minutes, prick surface lightly with fork.
Cut into desired size squares while still warm, do not remove from pan (they will fall apart unless cooled) let cool.
Store airtight or freeze.
Enjoy!

This shortbread recipe freezes well and keeps a long time. I hope you like it as much as my family and friends do.

Christmas Shoppe Puzzle

The Christmas Shop Puzzle Review

Puzzle Company: Ravensburger
Number of pieces: 500
Completed size: 20 x 14 inches
Puzzle Artist: no info on puzzle artist
Overall rating: 8.5/10

Puzzler Notes: Smaller sized puzzle pieces, the same size as you would see in a typical 1000 piece puzzle. This make it more of medium difficulty, no reference poster included.
The image quality is amazing.

The Christmas Shop by Ravensburger – Puzzle Review

This is one of my favourite puzzle sizes to do, I usually can only find this size in Buffalo Games brand. I have noticed more brands have picked up on this size. I also that it is less of a commitment than 1000 piece puzzle. The smaller size footprint of The Christmas Shop puzzle and the smaller sized piece size makes this puzzle a manageable size to do. The smaller pieces do makes more of a challenge and may not work well with new puzzler or younger children. I believe this is limited edition- if you can find a copy- grab quickly!
Did this one on my Ravensburger easel.

Galison “Winter Lights” Puzzle Review- Adult Puzzle Review

2:09 pm By Canadian Puzzler

Photo of Galison Winter Lights Puzzle

Puzzle Company: Galison Puzzles
Number of pieces: 500
Completed size: 20 x 20″
Puzzle Artist: Joy Laforme
Overall rating: 7.5/10

Puzzler Notes: Includes insert with information about the artist and image. Small sized puzzle pieces. Bonus points for having reference poster. Image features glittery foils and makes for a stunning image when done- a great puzzle gift.
Very little puzzle dust ( which I notice, and like!)

The puzzle image is stunning, with the metallic foil. I find that Galison puzzles have beautiful packaging, and make for a great gift- a fantastic and unique hostess gift.
The quality is fine, not the level of Ravensburger or Cobble Hill. The puzzle pieces are on the thin side and also a bit looser fit. The puzzle is a grid cut, the traditional puzzle piece cuts.

The puzzle artist, Joy Laforme currently lives and works in New Jersey and illustrates for puzzles, books & book covers, stationery, editorial, galleries, and more.
